: The study was approved by the National Health Science Research Committee of Malawi, as part of a broader study project into unnecessary caesareans and respectful maternity care (approval number 1995). The management of St. Luke’s Hospital gave permission to collect data in the facility. Collected data were all transferred anonymously into the database and nothing was traceable to women or involved staff. Case files were collected month for month from the Health Management Information System (HMIS) departments’ archives and kept locked in the research office during data collection.
