: All research methods involving human participants used in this study were conducted in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations including the Declaration of Helsinki. Ethics approval was granted by the Institutional Review Board at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (Ref: 16128) and the Cambodia National Ethics Committee for Health research (NECHR No 13). All participants provided written informed consent prior to participation. In the case of illiterate participants, verbal consent was obtained, in addition to this, witness signature was procured for the participation of illiterate participants. Mothers were only approached and enrolled prior to entering the second stage of labour. Women below the age of 18 years and/or with pre-existing conditions associated with a high-risk pregnancy and/or birth complications were excluded from the study.
