: Ethical approval of the protocol for the study was obtained from Makerere University school of medicine research and ethics committee (REC REF 2014–147), the Uganda National Council of Science and Technology (Kampala, Uganda), the University of Cape Town (South Africa), and the World Health Organization (Geneva, Switzerland). Institutional approval was also obtained from the district administration.All participants provided written, informed consent by signing a study consent form. For those who were illiterate, the contents of the consent form were read to them in local language by a research assistant before they appended a thumb print. All patients who were found to be at risk of suicide were referred to the mental health specialist at the district hospital. All adverse events during the cohort study were documented in a register of adverse events.
