: This was a retrospective analysis of de-identified records that were routinely collected as part of normal provision of health services. We sought guidance and approval from the Tak Community Advisory board (T-CAB, 4/1/2015), a group of individuals from the SMRU catchment areas who are familiar with the unique situation of this border population, as well as the Oxford Tropical Research Ethics Committee (OxTREC 28;09, amended 19 April 2012). With the guidance of these advisory boards, we determined that this research is exempt from ethics approval as it uses anonymized data that is not considered human subjects research. All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations. As this was a review of anonymized historical data, informed consent was not applicable.
