: Prior to study commencement, all the ethical issues were secured. Ethical clearance was gotten from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the University of Gondar. A permission letter was obtained from Gondar city administration health office before data collection. After the study participants were adequately briefed about the study, written informed consent was taken from each study participant whose age was above 16 years old and from parents/guardians of the study participants whose age was below 16 years old. Privacy and confidentiality of information were kept properly. All methods were performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations of the Declaration of Helsinki [CitationRef removed]. Study participants who had mild VI during the time of data collection were counselled and those with severe and complicated VI were referred to the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital for better diagnosis and management.
