: The study protocol was approved by three ethical review boards: Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) Research and Ethics Committee, Tanzania (MUHAS-REC-04-2020-188), The Aga Khan University Ethical Review Committee, Tanzania (AKU/2019/044/fb) and the National Institute for Medical Research, Tanzania (NIMR/HQ/R.8a/Vol IX/3493). The study protocol was carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations. All participants were informed about the purpose of the study and signed a consent form prior to their engagement in the interviews and/or FGDs. Written informed consent was obtained from all study participant, or if participants were under 16, from a parent and/or legal guardian. Legally authorized representatives of illiterate participants provided informed consent for the study.

: The first author of this study is a midwife with previous work experience from Denmark and West Africa. All background information and contextual understanding of Tanzania is based on extensive literature review and collaboration, supervision and discussions with the local research team based in Tanzania. Furthermore, the author had the chance to visit Tanzania and the two study sites during a one-month period during the analysis process to facilitate better contextualization and discussion. All authors have contextual knowledge of Tanzania and have worked extensively in the country.
