: Ethical clearance was obtained from the Mbarara University Research Ethics Committee (MUREC 04/11–19), and the protocol was registered with the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST-HS691ES). Administrative clearance was also obtained from the Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. We ensured that routine patient care continued, and obtained informed consent from all study participants, with a copy of the signed consent remaining with each participant. The consent form was translated into the local language (Runyankore) to aid participants’ understanding. The study methods were conducted in accordance with the guidelines and regulations of the Declaration of Helsinki.
