: Approval for this study and for the longitudinal Next Generation Cohort study were obtained from the Research Ethics Board, University of Manitoba in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki (2008). Written informed consent was obtained from all participating mothers. The study has an independent Indigenous steering circle which meets to review the study progress, questions, analysis to ensure relevance and potential benefit to community. This study has also been reviewed by the participant advisory committee composed of mothers and youth who have enrolled and are being followed in the Next Generation project.
