: Research in this manuscript incorporates anonymised patient data and oesophageal cancer tissue. The research was performed in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and was approved by local ethics committees as follows: In advance of the current study, ethical approval was obtained from the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of the Cork Teaching Hospitals to conduct research on human oesophageal cancer tissue in Cork (<i>ECM 4 (t) 02/03/10</i>). This current cohort only contains samples from the Northern Ireland Biobank (NIB ). NIB has approval from the Office for Research Ethics Committees Northern Ireland (<i>ORECNI reference</i><i>/NI/0030</i>) to collect, store and distribute samples to researchers. All OC samples are from adults with informed consent. Release of samples was agreed by the Deputy Scientific Director following submission of a detailed protocol and Material Transfer Agreement: (<i>NI Biobank outgoing material transfer agreement ref: NIB15-0181</i>).
