: According to the guidelines of the German Research Foundation and § 15 of the Professional Code of Conduct of the Medical Association Bremen, an ethical approval is not required for studies based on anonymous claims data. Furthermore, under German Law anonymous claims data can be used for scientific purposes without individual informed consent if obtaining consent appears disproportionate and would bias results (§ 27 Federal Data Protection Act), which was the case in this study. The study was carried out in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki.
