Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval to undertake the study was obtained from the Biomedical Research Ethics Committee of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (BE177/13) as well as from the KZN Department of Health, Health Research & Knowledge Management (HRKM 085/13). In addition, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of every hospital gave permission for the study to review the routine care undertaken in the respective hospitals’ neonatal nursery. Health workers were requested to complete a self-administered knowledge questionnaire. Completion of these questionnaires was voluntary and no identifying information was collected, and since assessment of knowledge gaps was deemed part of the routine duties of HWs, no specific consent was requested.
