: The study protocol was approved by the MSF Ethical Review Board (study number 1408) and the Haitian Ethical Review Board of the Ministry of Health. All patients and caretakers were provided explanation of the study in detail (including the need to return to the hospital to complete follow up visits) in either French or Creole and provided an information form in Creole. Caretakers provided written informed consent for participation in the study. None of the participants received any monetary (or other) form of payment for their participation in the study. However, the study did reimburse all travel costs acquired by caretakers and parents for their travel to and from hospital visits. Additionally, all parents/caretakers of participating infants were allowed to bring the infant for a free check by the pediatrician in the event the infant became sick. The study covered all costs associated with laboratory tests and vaccinations that could be provided at the hospital. Any costs related to a medical referral were not covered by the study.
