: This study was conducted following ethical principles and obtained approval from the Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) of Makerere University School of Medicine Higher Degrees Research Ethics Committee (SOMREC # REC REF 2018-095), the Regional Committee for Medical Research Ethics (REC) West #107632 and REC South East #50146 and was approved by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST # SS5103). The research protocol adhered to all relevant ethical guidelines, ensuring the protection of the rights and well-being of the study participants. Those with alcohol use problems received counselling and were referred for further support from Mbale Regional Referral Hospital. The parents provided written informed consent and children’s assent was sought in an age-appropriate manner. Throughout the study, strict confidentiality and anonymity were maintained to safeguard the privacy of the participants’ information. This research adhered to the ethical principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki and other applicable guidelines for human research, prioritizing the ethical considerations and welfare of the participants at every stage of the study.
