Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval was received from the South East Scotland Research Ethics committee (REC No: 15/SS/0142). Written consent to participate was required prior to participation in this study. In line with guidance on the principles of consent and parental assent for participation in non-CTIMP research of children and young people in Scotland (ScotCRN Guidance, 2012), we applied the principle of direct consent for all potential participants. We also took into account the ScotCRN guidance that in sensitive areas parental assent must be omitted. However, for those under the age of 14 years, who were unlikely to attend independently, we acknowledged that parental support was likely to be required for both research and treatment participation. For those under the age of 14 years we therefore decided to additionally provide parental/guardian participant information sheets so that parents/guardians could be verbally involved in the decision-making process.
