Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval was obtained from Haramaya University, College of Health and Medical Sciences, Institutional Health Research Ethics Review Committee (IHRERC). Obtaining only informed voluntary verbal consent was enough for ethical approval by the ethics committee because of the following reasons: I) regarding women’s educational status, the authors had prior data indicating that nearly half (48%) of the women in Ethiopia didn’t have the ability to read and write [CitationRef removed]. II) The study was an interviewer based crossectional study aimed for the direct beneficence of mothers in improving feto-neonatal and maternal health through boosting maternal awareness towards the adverse health impact of antenatal substance use. III) The study didn’t also involve any measurement that could bring physical harm to the mothers and their fetuses. Parental consent wasn’t required because all the interviewed mothers were above 16 years of old.
