Ethics approval and consent to participate
: All participants provided verbal consent to participate in our study. One of two study authors (YT or RA) read to each potential participant an information script in their first language (Amharic), and asked for them to confirm their comprehension at multiple times during the consent conversation. Participants then provided verbal confirmation that they voluntarily agreed to take part in the study. The consent process and the overall study were approved by the institutional review boards of Oregon State University, Middlebury College and Addis Ababa University’s Faculty of Medicine. We also received approval to carry out our research from Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health, the Amhara Regional Health Bureau in Bahir Dar, and district health offices.
