Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The <i>Vigilancia Integrada Comunitaria</i> (VICo) protocol was approved by human subjects committees of <i>Universidad del Valle de Guatemala</i> (UVG – local ethics approval) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and accepted by <i>Ministerio de Salud Publico y Asistencia Social</i> (MSPAS). At screening, all patients presenting at the facilities were asked for verbal consent if ≥ 18 years or verbal assent if < 18 years old. At enrollment, written informed consent was obtained from patients ≥ 18 years old and from guardians of patients < 18 years old. In addition, patients between seven and 17 years old were asked for informed written assent.
