Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Biomedical Research Ethics Committee (BREC) of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (BF 461/15) as well as the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health (KZ_2015RP43_313) approved the study and the Ethekwini Municipality Health Unit granted site permission. Participants were given verbal and written information about the purpose and process of the study and written informed consent was obtained from all mothers of the infants confirming their voluntary participation in the study. The CEO of the hospital signed consent for the one abandoned baby as the designated parental substitute and BREC was informed.
