Ethics approval and consent to participate

: The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources, Addis Ababa University and the Ethical Review Committee of Wollo University. Individual informed consent (written or witnessed thumb print) was obtained from all informants prior to the interviews following a verbal and written explanation of study aims and procedures. Informed assent was secured from the caregivers/guardians of study subjects under 18 years of age. Participation in the study was voluntary and confidentiality of the information was assured during as well as after data collection. Participants suspected of having malaria were referred to health centers for treatment.
