Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval for this study was granted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute Institutional Review Boards. Verbal consent was obtained from participants. There were no unmarried women under age 18 who participated in the study and married women are considered emancipated minors, thus no parental consent was required for women under age 18. The IRB approves verbal consent procedures (without a need for written consent) for simple surveys without any invasive procedures in an environment where literacy is low. Detailed information about the ethical guidelines required by EPHI can be found in the National Research Ethics Review Guidelines ().
