Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This study has been approved by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Office of Human Research Administration. The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Office of Human Research Administration granted a waiver of documentation of consent for adult afterschool site staff participants because the research presents no more than minimal risk to participants and involves no procedures for which written consent is normally required outside of the research context. The intervention impacts children attending sites via changes to the afterschool environment such as improved offerings of physical activity or healthier snacks served, but the research activities (e.g. data collection and intervention delivery) involved adults only. Site changes were made at the full discretions of afterschool site staff, no data was collected on individual child participants, children had no contact with investigators or other research study staff, and the research team did not have access to their identifiable data. Therefore, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Office of Human Research Administration granted a waiver of child assent and parental/guardian consent on behalf of all children.
