Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This study was based on the used on secondary data that was available on the public domain of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey. There was thus no need to obtain ethical clearance to use the data since no primary collection of data was needed for the study. Nevertheless, the surveys were approved by the Ethics Committee of the Global MICS, USA and the National Research Ethics Committee of Sierra Leone. Prior to participation in the surveys, informed consent forms emphasizing voluntary participation, noncollection of identifying information and strict observation of confidentiality with information was read to participants to obtain their consent. Verbal consent was obtained for each respondent participating and, for children age 15–17 years individually interviewed, adult consent was obtained in advance of the child’s assent. Study protocol was approved by the Ethics and Scientific Review Committee in March, 2017.
