Ethics approval and consent to participate
: As a part of the Youth in Iceland study series, the Planet Youth surveys have been exempted from full review by the National Bioethics Committee of Iceland as determined by Act # 44/2014 regarding research in the health sciences. Identical survey protocols have been reviewed and approved by West Virginia University IRB. This study protocol has also been approved by the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group Research Ethics Board. The ethics committee has approved the method of obtaining consent and ethical approval will be extended to cover the full time frame of the study. The student survey uses a passive consent process, whereby parents and caregivers are provided information about the study several days before and they are offered to opt-out of having their children complete the survey. In addition, student survey data is collected anonymously and without individual identifiers, therefore it is not possible to follow-up with students who provide responses that indicate they are experiencing elevated risk factors. Yet, they will stand to benefit from the intervention regardless, as the responding strategy will be applied at the community-level and will be designed to support the whole youth population. Significant amounts of time will be required from youth involved in participatory evaluation. An honoraria process will be co-created with the Planet Youth Lanark County Youth Advisory and will be applied to those involved in the participatory evaluation. Interested youth will also be invited to co-author presentations and publications.
