Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval was granted by the Institutional Review Board at the University of North Carolina (Study # 17–0128) and by the National Institute for Medical Research in Tanzania. Participants gave voluntary, written informed consent/assent to all study procedures, including HIV and HSV-2 testing and to receive the test result. Participants aged under 18 required the consent of a parent or guardian unless they met criteria for emancipated minors. The Institutional Review Board approved the collection of consent in this manner.
