Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The Helsinki Health Study (HHS) has been approved by the City of Helsinki, Finland, and ethical committee of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, Finland, has provided a positive statement about the study plan. As this particular study is fully register based, no ethical approval from a human sciences ethics committee was required to process these data (, p. 62). Thus, according to the Finnish Data Protection Act, register data can be processed for scientific research purposes based on public interest (, please see Section 4 for English translation and , 4 §, for the official Finnish version of the law). An informed consent to link the Helsinki Health Study survey to register data was separately asked following EU data protection laws and principles. However, this consent does not apply to this particular study, but it is needed in other studies using survey data with register linkages.
