: All authors confirm that all methods were carried out in accordance with relevant research guidelines and regulations. Ethics approval to conduct this study was obtained from the University of Livingstonia research ethics committee in Malawi (protocol number: UNILIA-REC/1/CUP 2/01). Informed written and oral consent was obtained from all the participants prior to the interview. Researchers also obtained written permissions from all the three city assemblies. The study did not involve experiments on human subjects.
: We informed the participants that we would disseminate the study through various mediums, such as policy briefs and open access scholarly journals to inform COVID-19 management in Malawi. With a full understanding of the research and its intended purpose, all participants gave full consent for authors to publish the findings using pseudonyms to replace the name of a person. The participant provided a written informed consent for the research team to use the photo of a public political rally.
