: Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee of the Human Sciences Research Council (REC 2/17/08/16). All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations. Permissions were also sought from the Provincial Government of the Western Cape and Department of Health to conduct research within the communities’ public health clinics and MOUs. Participants received information sheets that described the objectives, benefits and potential risks of the study, dissemination of findings, privacy and confidentiality, and their right to withdraw from the study at any time. Participants aged 18 years or older were asked to complete a consent form and participants aged 13-17 years were asked to complete an assent form before completing the baseline survey and being enrolled into the study. In addition, parent or legal guardian consent forms were required to be completed for participants younger than 18 years. Therefore, informed consent was obtained from participants aged 18 or older; informed assent was obtained from participants aged 13-17 and informed parental consent was obtained for participants aged 13-17.
