: Ethical approval for the study was renewed and obtained from the National Health Research Ethics committee of Nigeria (Approval Number: NHREC/01/01/2007–29/08/2019B); and the Johns Hopkins University Institutional Review Board (Approval Number: IRB00008732). We performed all methods according to the relevant guidelines and regulations by the National Health Research Ethics Committee of Nigeria and the Johns Hopkins University Institutional Review Board.Additionally, we used a standard oral consent script to obtain consent for all individuals interviewed. The consent script indicated individuals’ consent to participate in the study, confidentiality of participants, protection of participants from harm, and permission to record the interview. The National Health Research Ethics Committee of Nigeria and the Johns Hopkins University Institutional Review Board approved the verbal informed consent, given the low literacy level in the study setting, especially the inability of uneducated participants to read a written informed consent. After obtaining permission to record the interviews, we repeated the verbally informed consent process to capture it as part of the study transcripts.
