: All the methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations. The evaluation of the peer education programme (EPEP) was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the Western Cape Education Department and Research Ethics Committee. Parental/guardian approval was obtained by completing the informed consent form for learners who were below 18 years. Learners' assent to participate in the study was obtained.
