: Follow-ups from 2000 and all experimental protocols have been granted ethical approval from the Multicentre Research Ethics Committee (MREC), related to the National Health Service Research Ethics Committee. The 1958 and 1965 follow-ups pre-dated the establishment of ethics committees. The 1969, 1974, 1981 and 1991 follow-ups came before the establishment of the MREC system. Internal ethical reviews were undertaken for these waves.Informed consent was obtained from all subjects and/or their legal guardian(s). In 1958 when the birth survey was carried out, informed consent to participate in surveys was gained by respondents agreeing to be interviewed or respondents returning the completed questionnaire to the study team. NCDS 58 sought informed parental consent for the 7-year (1965), 11-year (1969) and 16-year (1974) surveys. Participants in later waves were required to sign informed written consent. Anonymised data from the surveys is made available to the research community via the UK Data Service []. All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations.
