: The study was approved by the ethics committees of National Institute for Medical Research, Tanzania (ref /Vol.IX/2922); the Ministry of Health of Gezira state, Sudan (ref 44/T/KH/1) and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (ref 18–043). Permission was also sought from the respective district authorities. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants. Additional consent for participation in the adolescent FGD group was provided by parents of the girls. We ensured confidentiality of the IDIs by conducting interviews in secure locations away from third parties where the patients were comfortable and by not capturing names of the patients. Additionally, patients were assured the discussion would not be shared with any third parties and the identifying characteristics such as occupation and town were securely locked away.
