: A proposal for this study was submitted through the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC)’s Science Review process, which is deemed as an acceptable alternative to the Research Ethics Board process. The proposal (unique identifier 2022-SR018-S) was approved by Science Review on July 27th 2022. This study was conducted in accordance with the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS 2 (2018) and the Privacy Act for Canada (1985). As the research uses human data, the study complies with the Declaration of Helsinki. All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations. PHAC signed a data sharing agreement with CIHI to get access to their de-identified data. Data from CHIRPP was analyzed by the Injury Surveillance Team at PHAC. For CIHI, consent to participate was not required because that data is disclosed to CIHI under the authority of jurisdictional privacy or health information legislation and is subject to related data-sharing agreements. CHIRPP is a PHAC program and the approval for use of CHIRPP data was granted by PHAC. Each hospital in the CHIRPP program has undertaken their own ethics review and no additional ethics review was required for this study. The data used for this study were drawn from an existing de-identified surveillance database and therefore anonymized. All methods were performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations.
