: All study activities involving students were in accordance with the ethical standards of the institutional review board of the Center for Health Studies of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG). The study protocol was reviewed and approved by UVG’s ethical committee on May 5, 2021 (No. 246-05-2021). The protocol was also approved by the Ministry of Education. All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations. Verbal assent was obtained from students conducting the KAP surveys and collecting hand swabs. A written informed consent form was sent home and obtained from the parents and/or legal guardians of those students who assented to participate, notifying them of their child´s participation and asking for their written consent to use their data. The form allowed parents to respond with “yes” or “no” and had to be returned to school. We only used data from students whose parents returned the written consent back to school and marked “yes”.
