: This study was approved by the UCL Research Ethics Committee (ref: 14649/004). All methods comply with the current guidelines and regulations which follow the Declaration of Helsinki. People taking part in a #KindnessByPost exchange expressed interest in participating in the present study via an online form. Those who expressed interest were invited to discuss the study by phone, and were provided with a participant information sheet (PIS) by email, at least 24 h prior to giving their informed consent. During the phone call and in the PIS, the aims of the study, that participation was voluntary, that their data would be stored securely and anonymously, what would happen if they participated, and how to withdraw from the study or raise any concerns were all outlined, and they had the opportunity to discuss any issues or questions. All participants gave their informed consent to be included in the study at the start of the data collection interview.
