: We used routinely collected administrative laboratory data and pseudonymised population data. According to the national regulation in the Netherlands, approval by an institutional review board and informed consent from patients was not necessary (as stated Dutch Civil Law Article 7:458, in the National Central Committee for Human Studies: ExternalRef removed and in the conduct of good behaviour in research ExternalRef removed). We performed an extensive General Data Protection Regulation test and we had approval by the Statistics Netherlands to use their data for our study purposes (no. 8871).As from 2002 ATHENA is managed by stichting hiv monitoring (SHM), the institution appointed by the Dutch Ministry of Public health, Welfare and Sport for the monitoring of people with HIV in the Netherlands. People entering HIV care receive written material about participation in the ATHENA cohort and are informed by their treating physician on the purpose of data collection, thereafter they can consent verbally or elect to opt-out. Data are pseudonymised before being provided to investigators and may be used for scientific purposes. A designated data protection officer safeguards compliance with the European General Data Protection Regulation. The findings were reported following the Strengthening of the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guideline. The study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki.
