: Ethics approval for the HILDA Survey was granted by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Melbourne in 2001 and has since been updated or renewed annually. Consent for participation in the HILDA Survey is obtained via use of an information letter to potential respondents, which details that informed consent is implied when participants agree to be interviewed. Parents/guardians provide consent for children aged 15–17 years. Thus, informed consent was obtained from all participants, or from parents or legal guardians if participants were under 18 years. Further ethics approval was granted by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Melbourne for the secondary analysis of the HILDA survey data undertaken within this project. All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations.
