: The University of Oxford Research Ethics Committee approved the study including the procedure of taking informed consent or assent (Ref: R62366). The study team liaised with ethics in order to ensure that procedures were followed that permitted use of a parental opt-out approach. Survey data from minors, which refers to individuals younger than the age of 16, may be collected with assent from minors but without explicit consent from parents/legal guardians in certain circumstances, and there are several surveys in the UK using this approach. The key reason to use the opt-out method is to attain a diverse and more generalisable sample, including students at greater risk of poor mental health, and in order to assess prevalence of mental health difficulties at the school level. The study adhered to the University of Oxford’s ‘approved procedures’ (e.g., recruiting through schools, not collecting explicit identifiers such as name, date of birth, address, and not using individual logins), and approval was given following review by the University ethical review board.
