: The project of “The Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology Study: PURE” is a global study (baseline), which was approved on both ethical and scientific grounds by McMaster University Research Ethics Board on 7 July 2003, the approval number is 03–206. The PURE-China (baseline) was approved by the Medical Research Ethics Committee of Fuwai Hospital and The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences on 24 March 2005.
