: In accordance with the Finnish legislation (the Act on Data Protection 2018/1050 and the Act on the Secondary Use of Health and Social Data 552/2019) as well as the ethical principles issued by the Finnish Research Ethics Advisory board and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare informed consents are not required in scientific research when it is based solely on register data. This applies even when processing sensitive personal level data. Thus, the requirement for informed consents was waived by the IRB (THL/1118/6.02.00/2021).
