: The study protocol was approved by the Makerere University School of Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee (MAKSSREC REF 08.2022) and the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST REF No SS1463ES). The study was conducted in accordance with the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. Written informed consent was obtained from parents/guardians of all participating pupils, and assent was obtained from all the pupils before their participation. Furthermore, written informed consent was obtained from parents and from all key informants prior to their participation. The participant information sheets, consent and assent forms were translated into Alur, the primary local language in Kaiso and Buhirigi. They were designed specifically for children and adults, and outlined the research aims, methods, timing, any anticipated benefits, outcomes, risks or costs. Participants were informed of confidentiality procedures, and confidentiality was respected during data collection. Consent and assent for each type of instrument were administered separately before the commencement of the interviews, with consent obtained prior to seeking assent.
