The Lifelines Cohort Study and the Vlagtwedde-Vlaardingen study were approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen, the Netherlands. The Rotterdam Study was approved by the medical ethics committee of Erasmus University. The eQTL lung tissue database was approved by the ethics committees of the Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec (Laval) and the UBC-Providence Health Care Research Institute Ethics Board (UBC). The study protocol was consistent with the Research Code of the University Medical Center Groningen and Dutch national ethical and professional guidelines.
