Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This study was conducted in respect of guidelines for medical research involving human subjects and was reviewed and approved by the College of Medicine and Health Science’s Ethics Committee at the University of Rwanda. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants. Non-literate participants were accompanied by a literate peer of their choice. Participants under 18 years of age were accompanied by their parent or guardian. Their informed assents and consent from parent or guardian were requested and signed before the enrolment to the study. Participants had the right to provide consent or not and to withdraw from the study at any time during the interview, without having to provide a reason. Risks to participants from this study were expected to be minimal since there was only minimal invasiveness during the collection of blood for the blood glucose and glycated haemoglobin test.
