: The data analysed were obtained from REDCap - a database that stores routine palliative care service data at the three hospitals and were collected in accordance with standard care guidelines for palliative care patients. All data were de-identified before analysis. Ethical approval was granted by the hospitals’ ethics review boards and the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of the Witwatersrand (Ethics number M230247). The requirement for informed consent was waived, as the data were retrospectively collected and fully de-identified, according to applicable ethical guidelines and regulations.
