Ethics approval and consent to participate: This study was approved by the SESARAM, EPERAM Ethics Committee and the Committee for Scientific Investigation (Approval No. 38/2018), on 29 October 2018. The requirement for informed consent for participation in this retrospective review of routinely collected and anonymised data was waived by the same committee. Family meetings themselves were conducted and documented according to local clinical consent procedures, with consent obtained from the patient or, when the patient lacked decision-making capacity, from the appropriate representative/family caregiver.

This manuscript does not contain any data from any individual or patient that could enable direct or indirect identification in any form, including distinctive demographic details, body images, or audiovisual material. All clinical and demographic data extracted from electronic health records were fully anonymized before data extraction and are presented and discussed in this manuscript exclusively in aggregate form.
