Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval was obtained from the Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS) Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) (HREC/17/QTHS/76), the HREC of the Northern Territory Department of Health and Menzies School of Health Research (2017-2893) and the James Cook University HREC (H7082). Governance approval was obtained from the THHS (SSA/17/QTHS/150), Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service (SSA/18/QCQ/23), Top End Health Services (support letter from the Executive Director of Medical Services) and Murrumbidgee Local Health District (SSA/18/MLHD/18). Approval to access BreastScreen client data was obtained from the Queensland Department of Health (PHA007000, PHA007805, PHA007854), NSW Population & Health Services Research Ethics Committee (2017/HRE1101) and BreastScreenNT. Clients consented to participate depending on the method of survey completion. The first question on the online survey specifically asked if the participant consented to complete the survey. A statement accompanied the question specifying that continuing to complete the survey online implied consent. Similarly, the first question asked by the researcher in an interview was whether or not the client consented to complete the survey. If the client consented verbally the researcher continued with the brief interview. Clients could choose to withdraw, not answer any questions, or leave at any time. These processes were approved by the ethics committees.
