Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The Minneapolis VA Health Care System’s Internal Review Board (IRB) for Human Studies reviewed the study protocol (#3337-A). The IRB granted this study a HIPAA waiver for written documentation of informed consent because it was considered a minimal risk study. Potential participants were mailed an IRB-approved cover letter with each survey that discussed the risks and benefits of taking part in the study and emphasized the voluntary nature of completing the survey. Participants’ signified their consent to participate in the research by returning a completed survey. Their returned, completed survey was considered documentation of their consent to participate.
