: Access to the dataset was obtained after submitting a proposal letter that explains the goal of the study to DHS Program International Inc. Since much of the data collected in the DHS survey contain personal information, the DHS program developed a module that meets international requirements of informed consent and privacy of information. In accordance with the World Health Organization’s guidelines on the ethical collection of information on domestic violence, only one eligible woman per household was randomly selected for an interview, and the module was not implemented if privacy could not be obtained [CitationRef removed].
