: The MAISHA CRT01 and longitudinal studies were conducted following WHO recommendations on researching violence against women[]. The MAISHA CRT01 study was approved by the Tanzanian National Health Research Ethics Committee of the National Institute for Medical Research (Ref: NIMR/HQ/R.8a/Vol. IX/1512), and the ethics committee of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (Ref:11642). The study was implemented in close collaboration with local leaders and we established a community liaison system to facilitate our team working with the communities where the study operates. Written informed consent (witnessed by an independent witness for illiterate participants) was obtained from all participants before administering any study procedures. The MAISHA longitudinal study received ethical approval from the Tanzanian National Health Research Ethics Committee (Ref: NIMR/HQ/R.8a/Vol.IX/2475) and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Medical Faculty Ethics Committee and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (Ref: 11918 – 4). Informed consent was obtained from the women immediately prior to the follow-on interviews.
