: The DPP study protocol was submitted to the University of The Witwatersrand Human Research Ethics Committee and also to the Institutional Review Board of the Population Council in New York, USA and written approval was granted by these committees. The study was structured in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki (last updated October 2013) which guides doctors in biomedical research involving human subjects. All the study participants underwent a private informed consent process prior to study participation, where they were notified of the purpose of the study, that their participation is voluntary and that they can withdraw from the study at any timepoint, of the study procedures and of any risks that may be present in their participation along with how their confidentiality will be protected by the study team. All study participants were given an opportunity to ask questions and get clarity, prior to signing the informed consent form for the study.
