Ethics approval and consent to participate: The study protocol was reviewed and approved by the Makerere University School of Public Health Research Ethics Committee, clearance number 404. Administrative clearance was sought and obtained from the hospital medical superintendent and the in-charge of the ART clinic. All participants provided written informed consent prior to study recruitment. The study was conducted in accordance with the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. Trained research assistants ensured participant privacy and confidentiality during interviews or examinations.
